Drug Testing Q&A

What is drug testing?

Drug testing analyzes your blood, urine, or a sample of hair for the presence of legal or illegal substances that could impair your ability to work safely. Many businesses require new employees to undergo drug testing before starting a job. This is particularly true in specific industries like construction and commercial driving, where workers operate heavy machinery and vehicles.

The human body breaks down various substances at different rates. Therefore, the time range for detecting drugs varies significantly from one substance to another.

When is drug testing required?

Employers require drug testing for various reasons, including:

  • Before hiring applicants
  • During employment (for example, some jobs drug test employees randomly)
  • When drug use is suspected based on symptoms in the workplace
  • After an employee has an accident or injury during work

Sometimes, drug testing is used to monitor treatment for alcohol and substance use disorders. For example, some court-ordered treatment programs require participants to abstain from drugs and alcohol. Drug testing makes it easier to monitor treatment progress.

Are there different types of drug testing?

Monument Occupational Medicine provides several types of drug testing, including:

Urine drug testing (UDT)

Also called a “pee test,” a UDT analyzes a urine sample for drugs and/or alcohol. Common substances a UDT screens for include marijuana, cocaine, opiates, and amphetamines.

Blood drug testing

A blood drug test analyzes your blood for illegal or prescription substances. This test is typically used in emergencies. For example, if your employer suspects you’re drunk on the job, they might refer you for a blood drug test.

Hair follicle drug testing

This test analyzes a hair sample for the presence of drugs. Since many drugs take weeks, even months, to clear your system, a hair test can assess your substance use over an extended period.

How long does it take to receive the results of a drug test?

How long it takes to receive drug test results will depend on the reason for the test and which test you underwent. Urine and blood drug testing typically provide results within 24-48 hours. Hair follicle drug testing usually takes longer.

If you pass the drug test, your Monument Occupational Medicine provider fills out a form that you submit to your employer. This paperwork gives you the all clear to begin or return to work.
